Tasting Notes

JS94

This has a very impressive, swirling and aromatic nose of orange zest, fine pepper, gently meaty charcuterie notes, eastern spices and redder berry fruits. Beautifully fragrant. The palate carries impressive density, richness and ripeness, while the tannins are super fine, building neatly and supporting long, chocolate-coated dark plums licorice. Great depth and persistence. Good wine but best from 2018 and thereafter for at least a decade. 100% syrah from the C“te Brune planted on mica-schist soil.

WA94

The 2013 Côte Rôtie la Landonne is a longer term prospect that will require patience. It offers youthful, yet beautifully pure notes of black cherries, roasted herbs, licorice and distinct minerality to go with a medium to full-bodied, structured, tannic yet balanced feel on the palate. Completely destemmed and aged in 40% new French oak, I followed this bottle for multiple days and it continued to gain more and more mid-palate depth, without losing purity or freshness. Give bottles 5-6 years of cellaring and enjoy through 2038. Rating: 94+

The Winery

Delas Frères

Under the inspired leadership of winemaker/ administrator Jacques Grange, who has carte blanche authority from the proprietors, the Louis Roederer/Deutz Champagne Firm, Delas has been on a fabulous qualitative roll for over a decade. They have enjoyed some great successes.
– Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

As a wine estate located in northern part of France’s Rhône Valley, Delas Frères is an estate known for its Syrah-dominant wines with the Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Crozes-Hermitages designations. Although the Delas family has been making wine since 1835 in the Rhône Valley, it was not until 1924 that they took the current name of the estate. In 1993, the Rouzaud family, owners of Louis Roederer, acquired both Delas Frères and Champagne Deutz. The family has parcels throughout the Rhone valley, most notably being the Domaine des Tourettes in Hermitage which is famously located on the steep granite part of the esteemed Hermitage hill. Additionally, they producer has a 45 acre vineyard in Crozes-Hermitage as well as a range of single vineyard wines from contract growers throughout the valley.
