The 2005 Haut Bailly is rapidly turning into a glorious wine. You instantly fall in love with the purity on the nose, luscious red cherries, wild strawberry and blueberry. This is still youthful and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a structured opening like many in this vintage. It exerts a gentle grip in the mouth, quite tensile and linear and perhaps just tightening up a tad toward the finish. It is biding its time, but it will repay those who cellar this outstanding 2005 for another four or five years. Tasted March 2017.
Dark purple in color. Offers pure fruit, with crushed raspberry, blackberry and dried flowers on the nose. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins that touch every inch of the palate. Long and racy, with elegance and beauty harking back to bygone days. Best after 2015. 6,665 cases made.
Hailing from the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux and ranked among the Graves Cru Classés, Haut Bailly is a tour-de-force in the region. The château has roots dating back to 1461 and has produced wines for centuries. The estate really took a leap forward in quality at the turn of the millennium following the purchase by American banker, Robert G. Wilmers.
Its 28 hectares of vines planted of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc finish up the area. Haut Bailly wines are known for their grip and depth with the silky smoothness that results from the warmer Léognan climate. This is a joy to have, especially in top vintages.
