The Winery

Philipponnat

This has been one of my favorite Champagne Sources for many years.
–Allen Meadows

For nearly 500 years, the Philipponnat family has been growing grapes from the soils in Champagne. The famed Champagne house began as a grower and supplier of the wines of Louis XIV’s court. The winery is particularly known for its Clos de Goisses vintage cuvées which are grown on a historical, 13.6 acre vineyard called Mont de Mareuil. Located on a 45 degree slope facing south, the Mont de Mareuil provides the Mareuil-sur- Ay region of Champagne with the warmest terroir. All of their 42 total acres of vineyards are Premier or Grand Cru, but what makes Philipponnat unique in the cellar is that they use a form of solera system aging for their reserve, non-vintage wine blends. They claim to be the first to indicate the prominent year of the NV blends, dosage level, and disgorging date on the back label. Philipponnat’s range of wine is some of the finest Champagne on the market today.

Tasting Notes

WA95
The 1999 Clos des Goisses flows from the glass with the essence of minerals, chalk, smoke, ash, white peaches, pears, flowers and sweet oak. This is a muscular, powerful wine that needs serious bottle age to come around, yet it possesses striking clarity and detail in its aromatics and flavors. Clos des Goisses is one of the most rewarding wines to drink when mature, and I have no doubt this will be another splendid version. This refined, sumptuous wine is not to be missed. Clos des Goisses is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and 30% of the wine was fermented in oak. This bottle was disgorged in March 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024.
WE94
One of the grandest single vineyards in Champagne, an immensely steep south-facing hillside that dominates Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. From here, Philipponnat is able to produce powerful wines with toasty, ripe fruit, powered with yeast and flavors of hazelnuts and white fruits. While not as tense and without the aging potential of 1998, this is without doubt a great Champagne.
