Sangiovese gets a bad wrap. How can the most widely planted grape in a country that everyone loves and romanticizes get so little respect? It shares the same problem as Mexican food. Everyone loves it, but not everyone is willing to justify the price despite the heights it can achieve when truly refined. You drink the wines on vacation when you are there, but do you really ever put them in your cellar? Considering the price of premier french wines, I find these wines to be charming, savory, and enticing. Sour tart cherries and dried leather, tobacco, tomato leaf, savory herbs, Brunello can be akin to Bordeaux except it's a fraction of the price, matures faster and I would argue is more versatile at the dinner table. There's a lot here for everyone. Great producers, great vintages, good deals, and new things to discover. These wines can be enjoyed with everything from red sauce dishes, pizzas, cured meats and cheese, sausage, all kinds of pork, lamb, and veal. If you like burgundy, and you like acidity and earthiness, give some aged Sangiovese a try.
