Descending from a French family of winemakers, René Barbier III travelled south to start Clos Mogador among DOQ Priorat vineyards in Catalonia, Spain. He led the original Priorat movement that high quality wines could still be made in the oft considered ‘forgotten corner’ of Catalonia. By nursing old and struggling Grenache and Carignan vines back to life on steep hillsides, his resulting wines became a smashing hit among locals and eventually oenophiles abroad. His intensely concentrated blends of Cabernet, Garnacha, Syrah, Carignan and other varietals deliver power and structure of typical of Priorat yet they possess elegance and finesse to round out its flavors. Clos Mogador is widely considered a rising star approaching an echelon reserved for elites such as Vega Sicilia, Pingus, and López de Heredia.
