Tasting Notes

Fresh and aromatic, this red is packed with sweet cherry, leather, clove and iron flavors. Fused to a bed of stiff, mouthcoating tannins, with a long aftertaste of sweet spice and mineral. Still a baby, but well-balanced and beginning to develop. Best from 2015 through 2035. 500 cases made.

Altare`s 2006 Barolo Cerretta shows plenty of Serralunga intensity and brawn. There is good energy to the black cherry, smoke, licorice and spice flavors. Within the context of the vintage the 2006 Cerretta is a relatively approachable wine, with the fruit front and center, and less of the explosiveness that is typical of the year. I also find a bit less excitement than in the best wines Altare has made from this site. The 2006 will continue to drink nicely for the next 10-15 years, perhaps longer, although today I don`t see too much potential for improvement.

The Winery

Altare, Elio

Elio Altare is a producer of Barolo in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. It is known for having introduced modern winemaking techniques to a traditional, old world region, and Elio Altare wines, made predominantly from the Nebbiolo grape variety, are famous for their richer style.

Elio Altare has 10 hectares (25 acres) in various vineyards around La Morra. These are mainly planted on calcareous marl soils known as Tortonian, and produce more opulent fruit than their eastern counterparts. In the cellar, the wines undergo a short fermentation in stainless steel before aging sur lie in small French oak barriques. This is quite different to the traditional aging of Barolo in large Slovenian oak casks. The resulting wines are more approachable in their youth than traditional Barolo. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Barolos, including a Cannubi and a Brunate bottling. Elio Altare also produces a Dolcetto d'Alba and Barbera d'Alba, as well as a Langhe Rosso DOC.
